Two damaged people find love and redemption in bestseller Smith's latest, a heavy-on-the-syrup romance that drafts 9/11 into sentimental service. Cathy Deen is Hollywood's "it girl" until a paparazzi car chase ends in a car fire that horrifically scars Cathy, ending her glamorous life. News of the accident soon reaches her hometown inside mountains of North Carolina, where Cathy's cousin, Crossroads Café proprietress Delta Whittlespoon, sees the news on CNN and resolves to get in touch with Cathy. She enlists the assistance of Thomas Mitternich, a new addition on the Crossroads community who appeared in town four years ago to drink himself with the grief of losing his wife and son in 9/11. Thomas, using his The big apple contacts, helps Delta make it through to Cathy, and after calls from Thomas and overnighted boxes of Delta's biscuits, Cathy returns to her ancestral home, where she falls fond of Thomas since they both try and rebuild their lives. Smith's prose does little to enliven a boilerplate plot, and 9/11 comes from little a many more than a simple method to heap suffering over a character. (Sept.)

Cathy is on top with the world--beautiful, rich, a high movie star about to launch a fresh career being a cosmetics queen--when an unscrupulous photographer looking of the story causes her car to crash and burn, destroying her perfect body as well as her career and sending her scurrying for the destination to hide her scars. Thomas, on another hand, continues to be mourning the deaths of his wife and young son in the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center and it is slowly drinking himself to death while sleeping within the bed of his truck within an isolated hamlet within the North Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains. Together, however, they find these are stronger and better people, and so they begin to look at an active interest in the mountain community that has taken them both to their hearts, and within their kitchens. Once again, Smith has established an unforgettably poignant story within the best tradition of contemporary southern romantic women's fiction. Lynne Welch

Product Description
Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she's made against each other of the bloody arena alive, she's still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay to the unrest? Katniss. And what's worse, President Snow has caused it to be clear that no person else is safe either. Not Katniss's family, not her friends, not the folks of District 12. Powerful and haunting, this thrilling final installment of Suzanne Collins's groundbreaking The Hunger Games trilogy promises being one from the most mentioned books with the year.
A Q&A with Suzanne Collins, Author of Mockingjay (The Final Book of The Hunger Games)
Q: You have said through the start that The Hunger Games story was intended like a trilogy. Did it genuinely end just how you planned it from your beginning?

A: Very much so. While I didnrrrt know every detail, of course, the arc from the story from gladiator game, to revolution, to war, for the eventual outcome remained constant through the writing process.

Q: We understand you worked about the initial screenplay to get a film to be based on The Hunger Games. What may be the biggest difference between writing a novel and writing a screenplay?

A: There was several significant differences. Time, for starters. When you are adapting a novel in to a two-hour movie you simply can't take everything with you. The story has to become condensed to fit the new form. Then there is the question of how best to take a magazine told in the first person and offer tense and transform it in to a satisfying dramatic experience. In the novel, you don't ever leave Katniss for the second and so are privy to all or any of her thoughts so you'll need a way to dramatize her inner world and to create it possible for other characters to exist outside of her company. Finally, there is the challenge of the way to present the violence while still maintaining a PG-13 rating in order that your core audience can view it. A great deal of the situation is acceptable on the page that would not be on a screen. But wait, how certain moments are depicted may ultimately be inside the director's hands.

Q: Are you in a posture to consider future projects while working on The Hunger Games, or are you immersed in the world you are currently creating so fully that it is simply too challenging to think about new ideas?

A: We have several seeds of ideas floating around within my head but--given that much of my focus remains on The Hunger Games--it is going to be awhile before one fully emerges and i also can commence to develop it.

Q: The Hunger Games is a yearly televised event in which one boy and something girl from each in the twelve districts is made to participate in the fight-to-the-death on live TV. What can you believe the selling point of reality television is--to both kids and adults?

A: Well, they're often setup as games and, like sporting events, there's an curiosity about seeing who wins. The contestants are generally unknown, which ensures they are relatable. Sometimes they have very talented people performing. Then you have the voyeuristic thrill—watching people being humiliated, or delivered to tears, or suffering physically--which I find very disturbing. There's also the possibility for desensitizing the audience, so that whenever they see real tragedy playing out on, say, the news, it does not have the impact it should.

Q: Should you were instructed to compete in the Hunger Games, exactly what do you imagine your personal skill would be?

A: Hiding. I'd be scaling those trees like Katniss and Rue. Since I was trained in sword-fighting, I guess my best hope can be to have hold of an rapier if there were one available. But reality is I'd probably get in relation to its a four in Training.

Q: What do you hope readers should come away with after they read The Hunger Games trilogy?

A: Questions about how precisely elements of the books might be relevant within their own lives. And, when they are disturbing, the things they might do about them.

Q: What were some of your favorite novels when you are a teen?

A: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers
Nineteen Eighty Four by George Orwell
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
Lord from the Flies by William Golding
Boris by Jaapter Haar
Germinal by Emile Zola
Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury

Gr 7 Up–The final installment of Suzanne Collins's trilogy sets Katniss in a single more Hunger Game, but this time it really is for world control. While it is really a clever twist for the original plot, it indicates that there's less focus around the individual characters and more on political intrigue and large scale destruction. That said, Carolyn McCormick continues to breathe life in a less vibrant Katniss by showing her despair both at those she feels responsible for killing and at her very own motives and choices. This is surely an older, wiser, sadder, and intensely reluctant heroine, torn between revenge and compassion. McCormick captures these conflicts by changing the pitch and pacing of Katniss's voice. Katniss is both a pawn from the rebels and the victim of President Snow, who uses Peeta to try to control Katniss. Peeta's struggles are very well evidenced in his voice, which goes from rage to puzzlement for an unsure go back to sweetness. McCormick also makes all the secondary characters—some malevolent, others benevolent, and several confused—very real with distinct voices and agendas/concerns. She acts such as an outside chronicler in giving listeners just “the facts” but also respects the individuality and different challenges of each in the main characters. A successful completion of a monumental series.–Edith Ching, University of Maryland, College Parkα(c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Starred Review. Gr 7 Up--Every year in Panem, the dystopic nation that exists where the U.S. utilized to be, the Capitol holds a televised tournament where two teen "tributes" from each with the surrounding districts fight a gruesome battle on the death. Within The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, the tributes from impoverished District Twelve, thwarted the Gamemakers, forcing the crooks to let both teens survive. In this rabidly anticipated sequel, Katniss, again the narrator, returns home to find herself more the center of attention than ever. The sinister President Snow surprises her which has a visit, and Katniss’s fear when Snow meets with her alone is both palpable and justified. Catching Fire is split into three parts: Katniss and Peeta’s mandatory Victory Tour with the districts, preparations to the 75th Annual Hunger Games, and a truncated version in the Games themselves. Slower paced than its predecessor, this sequel explores the world of Panem: its power structure, rumors of a secret district, along with a spreading rebellion, ignited by Katniss and Peeta’s subversive victory. Katniss also deepens as being a character. Though initially bewildered from the interest to her, she comes almost to embrace her status since the rebels’ symbolic leader. Though more of the story takes place away from arena than within, this sequel has enough action to impress Hunger Games fans and leaves enough questions tantalizingly unanswered for readers to become desperate for that next installment.

Reviewers were happy to report that the Hunger Games trilogy is alive and well, and many types of looked forward on the third book within the series after this one's stunning conclusion. But they disagreed over whether Catching Fire was as effective as the original book Hunger Games or needs to be viewed as somewhat of an "sophomore slump." Several critics who remained unconvinced by Katniss's romantic dilemma made unfavorable comparisons on the human-vampire-werewolf love triangle in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. But most reviewers felt that Catching Fire had been a thrill because Collins replicated her initial success at balancing action, violence, and heroism in a very method that will enthrall young readers without giving them (too many) nightmares.

Starred Review. Reviewed by Megan Whalen Turner
If there really are merely seven original plots within the world, it's odd that boy meets girl is always mentioned, and society goes bad and attacks the great guy never is. Yet we've Fahrenheit 451, The Giver, Your Home from the Scorpion—and now, following an extended tradition of Brave New Worlds, The Hunger Games. Collins hasn't tied her future to your specific date, or weighted it down with a lot of finger wagging. Rather less 1984 and rather more Death Race 2000, hers can be a gripping story set inside a postapocalyptic world in which a replacement for the United states of america demands a tribute from each of its territories: two children being used as gladiators in a very televised fight towards the death.Katniss, from what was once Appalachia, offers to adopt the host to her sister in the Hunger Games, but after this ultimate sacrifice, she actually is entirely dedicated to survival at any cost. It is her teammate, Peeta, who recognizes the value of holding onto one's humanity in such inhuman circumstances. It's a credit to Collins's skill at characterization that Katniss, like a new Theseus, is cold, calculating and still likable. She has got the attributes to be a winner, where Peeta has got the grace to get a fantastic loser. It's no accident these games are presented as pop culture. Every generation projects its fear: runaway science, communism, overpopulation, nuclear wars and, now, reality TV. Hawaii of Panem—which needs to maintain its tributaries subdued and its citizens complacent—may have came up with Games, but mindless television is the real danger, the means through which society pacifies its citizens and punishes people that don't conform. Will its connection to reality TV, ubiquitous today, date the book? It might, but for now, celebrate this the correct book at the right time. What happens if we choose entertainment over humanity? In Collins's world, we'll be obsessive about grooming, we'll talk funny, and many types of our sentences can finish using the same rise as questions. When Katniss is sent to stylists to get made more telegenic before she competes, she stands naked looking at them, strangely unembarrassed. They're so unlike people that i am no more self-conscious than if a trio of oddly colored birds were pecking around my feet, she thinks. In order to not hate these creatures who're sending her to her death, she imagines them as pets. It is not exactly the contestants who risk the loss of these humanity. It is all who watch. Katniss struggles to win not just the Games however the inherent contest for audience approval. Because this can be the first book in a series, not things are resolved, and what's left unanswered will be the central question. Has she sacrificed too much? We determine what she's given approximately survive, and not whether the price was too high. Readers will wait eagerly to learn more.

Grade 7 Up -In a not-too-distant future, the Usa of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to become replaced by Panem, a country divided to the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to take part in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation in the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem because the 24 participants are expected to eliminate their competitors, literally, effortlessly citizens necessary to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss's young sister, Prim, is selected because the mining district's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, the son from the town baker who seems to have every among the fighting skills of the lump of bread dough, is likely to be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives. Collins's characters are completely realistic and sympathetic since they form alliances and friendships inside the face of overwhelming odds; the plot is tense, dramatic, and engrossing. This book will certainly resonate with the generation raised on reality shows like 'Survivor' and 'American Gladiator.' Book certainly one of a planned trilogy.Jane Henriksen Baird, Anchorage Public Library, AK
